We have been involved in Equality and Diversity Training with Dorset Police. The sessions
have been attended by, on average, 14 delegates, made up from both serving officers
and administration staff.
During these training sessions, we make sure that we maintain the privacy, respect
and integrity of the travelling communities being represented. We make sure that
the Dorset Police understand that we are only giving our own ‘individual’ perspectives,
from our personal experiences and cannot reflect the whole spectrum of the diverse
and wide-ranging groups that make up the entire travelling community.
The aims of these training sessions are:-
- To demonstrate the positives aspects of our communities in order to address the often
negative social stereotyping levied at the travelling community.
- Help understanding of our lives, the people who makes up the different communities,
thereby helping to improve future relationships between the police and our communities.
- The training activates discussion and sheds light on the often confusing crosscutting
themes associated with travelling communities. This is accompanied by a power point
presentation kushti bok has made to create a guided structure, showing photographs
and exercises that help demonstrate the highlighted themes that are involved in the
traveller training sessions.
- Although social prejudice is common in individuals from all walks of life, no matter
the ‘social stereotype’, the social responsibility of the professional agencies involved
in policing the civil population of this country demand a greater degree of integrity
and professionalism, which we are encouraging with this training.
